Art and Culture

Go on a journey of discovery, enjoy yourself, become enthusiastic and allow yourself to be inspired: these are aspects of Erlangen’s art and culture scene. In the centre of one of the best preserved Baroque planned towns in Germany one is confronted with tradition and modernity, with the innovative and experimental in all areas of culture.

Erlangen is renowned as a town of festivals. Each year, in late summer, thousands of literature enthusiasts meet to talk about German literature at the Poetenfest. Another cultural highlight is the International Comic Salon which is an enormous fair featuring all well-known comic publishers.

Further events are the Silent Film Music Days and the International Puppet Theatre Festival, one of the largest and most important events of modern puppet, image and installation theatre in the German speaking world. The Markgrafentheater, the oldest Baroque theatre still being used as such in southern Germany, is renowned for its first and inaugural public performances and exceptional production concepts. Cabaret fans gather at "theater fifty- fifty", one of the best-known places for cabaret in Franconia.

The Bamberger Symphonic Orchestra is a regular performer in the concert programme in the Huguenot town, and the traditional open air concerts with top notch performers held in the Schlossgarten are very inviting.

Top class art and cultural history are presented in the town’s galleries. The 'Kunstpalais' holds exhibitions of modern, internationally acclaimed work. Group exhibitions which demonstrate the conceptual relationships of questions raised by literature, philosophy and film play a major role. Aspects of the town’s history and culture are exhibited in the town’s museum, housed in the former town hall of the old town (Altstadt). Exhibitions of artists living in the metropolitan area of Nuremberg are to be found in the town’s art gallery (Kunstmuseum), Loewenich Palace.
